South African medals are awarded to military personnel, police officers, and civilians for bravery, outstanding service, or achievement in various fields.
The highest honor is the Order of the Baobab, awarded to South African citizens for exceptional contributions to their field of work or to society as a whole.
Other notable medals include the Order of Mendi for Bravery, awarded to individuals who have risked their lives to save others; the Order of the Companions of O.R. Tambo, awarded to non-South Africans who have contributed to the struggle against apartheid; and the Pro Merito Medal, awarded to members of the South African Defence Force for exceptional service.
The South African military also awards campaign medals for service in various conflicts, including the Border War and the South African War.
In addition, various sporting and cultural organizations in South Africa award medals to recognize achievements in their respective fields, such as the Comrades Marathon medal or the National Arts Festival medal.
